GIY Ireland, Together We Grow

June Update

Published: Jun Tue, 2015    By: Elke Hayes-Kinsella

It's been a busy couple of months for the children's planting project. Our potatoes, peas, shallots and magetouts are coming along very well. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for our carrots. We've just sown our third batch of seeds, hopeful that this time we'll be successul and the kids can look forward to another glorious yield at harvest. We've put netting over the raised bed to help deter anything 2- or 4-legged that may have been disturbing the soil when nobody was watching and the children have been promised a visit by the ice cream van if we can keep our garden and the plants therein from being maimed. I have a lot of faith in the power of positive incentives smile

We took part in the GIY & Innocent Smoothies 'Sow & Grow' campaign and last week planted out some of the courgette and pumpkin plants that we didn't manage to kill. We also replaced the compost in our vegetable trug which some local cats had decided to use as a toilet. Not what you want when you're growing lettuce in it.... Anyway, we've sown another round of lettuce seeds and covered the trug in netting, which should keep the felines at bay. Our flower beds are thriving, last year's flowers having self-seeded. The bees are already making the most of the blooms which is great because we plan to focus on the value of pollinators for gardents in one of our upcoming sessions. I'll be updating our album this afternoon with pics from our recent sessions if anyone is interested in checking these out.
