The GIY Debate

The GIY Debate

Raised beds or no raised beds? Is biodynamics science or superstition? Should raw milk be banned? Things get hot and heavy occasionally here in the GIY Debate forum but we always respect opinions and have some fun.

Other food you can grow

Other food you can grow

For most GIYers, the progression to home-grown food utopia starts with herbs, then progresses to veg and then to fruit. But for many, the journey doesn't end there and branches in to the wonderful world of nuts, mushrooms and more!

Pigs

Pigs

Oink, oink - irascible, exasperating, charming, maddening, delicious. Keeping pigs is like advanced GIYing - it can turn a garden in to a smallholding, a field in to a farm. Pigs will root up and improve soil, produce a tonne of great farmyard manure and provide meat for a family of four for a whole year. What's not to love?

Bees

Bees

Good morning your majesty! Keeping bees for honey is an ancient practice and one that still makes tremendous sense for the GIYer - bees to pollinate your veg plants and free honey to boot? This is a forum for discussions on beekeeping.

Animals for the small holder

Animals for the small holder

IF one of your goals is to be self-sufficient in food production then this forum is for you. Raising your own small animals can provide households with any of these- milk, eggs, manure, wool, feathers, shells for decoration, and most importantly meat. Raising your own animals also gives you peace of mind -- you know that your animals were raised humanely and treated with care. Post your queries here

Barter Board

Barter Board

Every GIYer knows what it's like to have a sudden glut of produce - more tomatoes then you can shake a stick at, courgettes coming out your nose etc. This is a barter board where you can exchange produce. Half a dozen eggs for a punnet of strawberries? Good deal. Remember, keep it local, be specific and see what happens.
