The beginning of our sensory garden

Published: Oct Mon, 2013    By: Liz Swords

We were absolutely delighted last week to receive our cheque for €1500 from the Get Ireland Growing Fund.

We are all so excited because at long last, after waiting and hoping for many years to be able to develop a sensory garden here at Nano Nagle School which presently caters for over 70 pupils aged 4 - 18 years who have varying special needs ranging from Autism and Challenging behaviour to moderate and severe and profound learning disabilities, we now have the money to be able to go ahead with our project.

The sensory garden will be of great benefit for all our pupils, but especially for those who have severe and profound disabilities as hopefully they will be greatly stimulated by it and also get much pleasure in working in it and helping to grow the flowers, fruit and vegetables we intend to plant there.

We have had a very busy start to our school year but now that we have the money we intend to go and by the blocks, sand and cement needed to build our retaining planters and hopefully work will start on the building during the half term holiday in a couple of weeks.

We then intend to start the first planting with spring bulbs and wallflowers which will give us lovely perfumes in spring time.

It certainly will be 'all systems go' for us in the next few weeks and we are all really looking forward to it.
