He was very informative and helpful in relation to their stock and any queries members had.
They carry a large stock of fruit trees, fruit bushes and plants such as Strawberries.
Depending on your requirements he will give advice on the most suitable stock, for example suitable for espalier growing. Tom will send out catalogues on request at [email protected] or he can be contacted on 087 2718879.

- I recently organised a group of 30 GIYers / gardeners to visit Cloughjordan ECO village, Cloughjordan, Co. Tipperary. Other GIYers may be interested in this, I coordinated this visit with Davie Philip of Community Resilience Programme. For anyone that may be interested in taking a trip, Davies contact details are Davie Philip Community Resilience Programme Cultivate Living & Learning An Cosán Cúil, Cloughjordan, Co Tipperary. E-mail: [email protected] Skype: sustdavie Twitter: @comresie Office: 0505 56061 Mobile: +353 (0) 87 6340697 Web: www.cultivate.ie The visit took place on Sunday 21st April, Cloughjordan ecovillage is the first of this type in Ireland. Davie gave us a very informative guided tour and an insight into CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) and how it operates in their village. Households make regular monetary contributions which covers the cost of growers’ wages, administration, and other running costs , in return they receive fresh vegetables three times per week, fresh milk daily, and meat seasonally. There already is a group of 50 energy-efficient homes on site, to meet the needs of this growing community, they have enlisted Pat Malone who farms an adjoining 40 acre farm where using biodynamic methods he produces vegetables, milk and meat for them. Pat gave a very informative talk to the group and answered many questions put to him. There is also a hostel on site to host people who my wish to take courses which are on offer at Cloughjordan. We move on to the RED garden, Research, Education and Demonstration, here we were met by Bruce Darrell who is a very energetic young man who gave us an insight into his research on different methods of growing vegetables, we also visited his poly tunnel, where a good selection of vegetables are thriving. Davie then guides us along the Apple walk way where there are 1,000 apple trees planted, these trees were procured from seed savers in Scarrif, Co. Clare. Then on to the Tunnels where there are an abundance of vegetables growing. On our way back to the village we see a large bank of solar panels which supplies energy to the households. Davie was very informative and passionate about the whole project. Here are some of the comments I have received from the group. “Topics covered? FANTASTIC, Pat Malone (farmer) talk, and his Questions and Answer session? Brilliant, friendly, excited, enthusiastic Bruce Garrell on his talk and demo RED garden? Brilliant, passionate, knowledgeable The Polly tunnels? Amazing! amazing! Amazing!, did I tell you the Polly tunnels were amazing?” “Very impressed with the last Bio-dynamic tunnel. I felt it to be a sort of "garden of Eden" indoors” “Davies tour was very good. Although the way of life is not for me, I would recommend this tour to everyone. I would love to visit in about fifteen years to see the progress and find out what has happened to the produce of the 1000 apple trees! (Do Bulmer’s know?).” “The afternoon flew by with an excellent guide to take us around and explain the different aspects of life in Cloughjordan. I loved the way the ecovillage is integrated with the existing village, it makes so much sense and stripes away any feeling of isolation and separateness which could easily have arisen between the 'incomers' and the 'locals'. Their CSA is inspiring and could be a real pattern for communities around the country. I thought Davie a serious and committed person with the ideals of the community at the heart of his life, this came across as he showed us the village. tunnels full of lettuce took my breath away, amazing especially given the cold spring we have had this year.” “All the speakers were knowledgeable and answered all questions, I thoroughly enjoyed it and would go again.” “Pat..could still be there with Pat.. passionate on his subject. Bruce...gave us a lot to think about..very good.” “The tour for the time we had was a good introduction to the overall concept of the eco village the farm and gardens.” As you will see from the comments this was a very successful and enjoyable trip, I would highly recommend a visit to other GIY groups. I have attached just a few photographs taken on the day.
