Overview

Our autumn masterclasses take place at the GIY Market Garden at Carriganore in Waterord.  There are six masterclasses in all, taking place each Saturday morning from 10am to 12 noon from Saturday September 26th to Saturday October 31st.  Each class costs €20 or you can book all six for €100.  Places are strictly limited.  Cost includes course handout.

Growing Salads, 26th September

Saturday 26th September, 10am to 12 noon.  €20.

 Types of lettuce, salad mixes, endive, indoor and outdoor salad production all year round; harvesting slug control, etc.

Growing Tomatoes, October 3rd

Saturday October 3rd, 10am – 12pm. €20.

Tomato types and varieties; growing systems; sowing, planting, harvesting; fertility; pollinating;  side-shooting; de-leafing; pest control

Growing in Polytunnels, October 10th

Saturday October 10th, 10am – 12pm. €20.

Tunnel types and sizes; site seclection; erection, bed systems; planting up; irrigation systems; all year round cropping; My top ten tunnel crops.

Seed Sowing, October 17th

Saturday October 17th, 10am – 12pm. €20.

Seed types; compost; types of seed trays; labour saving ways of seed sowing and propagation vegetables indoor and out for fast results; watering

Fleeces & Groundcovers, October 24th

Saturday October 24th, 10am – 12pm. €20.

Using a combination of fleece and ground covers is an invaluable aid to organic growing – it can extend the growing season by weeks, add higher temperatures, help with pest control, moisture retention, weed control.  We will cover all types of ground covers, fleece and meshes.

Squashes and Pumpkins, October 31st

Saturday October 31st, 10am – 12pm. €20.

An appropriate masterclass for Halloween!   A masterclass on growing squash, pumpkins and courgettes - types of squash e.g. summer and winter; pumpkin types ; extending the season; growing indoor and outdoor; planting techniques; ground covers.  We might even do some pumpkin carving for kids!

About Dermot Carey

Dermot Carey is GIY’s Head Food Grower. With over 20 years of relevant experience, Dermot worked as Head Gardener at Lissadell House and Gardens in Sligo and at the bio-dynamic Dominican Farm in Wicklow Town.  He also ran his own market garden business on Inis Mor on the Aran Islands for 7 years.
